Characteristics of Wood

Oak is an open grain wood that has a range of color of white, yellow and pink and is sometimes streaked with green, yellow and black mineral deposits and may contain some wide grain. Red oak sometimes appears pink and white oak, white/light gray with a natural finish.
Cherry is an elegant, multi-colored closed grain wood and will darken or "mellow" with age. This mellowing is a natural occurrence and the benefit of owning a solid cherry kitchen. Varies from near white to red/orange with a natural finish, a light stain will lessen the variation.
Maple is a closed grain wood that is predominately off-white in color, although it also contains light hues of yellow, brown and pink. Hard maple occasionally contains light tan or dark mineral streaks. Maple tends to yellow slightly with age. Consistent and best suited for lighter stains.
Hickory/Pecan is an open grain wood that is known for its wide variation in color. It is not uncommon to see doors, or parts of doors that range in color from deep brown to off white when finished in light or natural stains.
Birch is a closed grain wood that is predominately off white in color with light hues of yellow, brown and pink. Contains light reddish brown heartwood with sapwood pale to nearly white. Similar to maple, but coarser in texture and inconsistent.
Walnut is a dark, rich open grain wood that has dark brown heartwood with nearly white sapwood. Well suited to darker stains.
Alder is a straight grained, even textured, fairly soft wood and is pale yellow to reddish brown in color. Accepts stains evenly from light to dark.
